PEPPER'S ANSWERS

GENERAL

Applying to a Pepper Experience

- How do I book a place on an Experience?

You need to fill out our booking form. This can be done online or by downloading a booking form and posting it to us. Along with your booking, we require a deposit of betwen £350 and £450, depending on the trip you have chosen. This will be returned to you should no places be available on the programme. When you receive our booking confirmation and payment schedule your place on the Experience is guaranteed subject to our terms and conditions.

BACK

- Do I need to attend an interview?

Generally you will not be required to attend an interview, unless an Experience is under high demand, at which point we will need to select the individuals who we feel will benefit most from the Experience. You will be required to fill out our booking form however which includes references. We will assess this in order to determine who we feel will get the most out of an Experience.

BACK

- How far in advance do I need to book?

Places for each Experience are in high demand so we strongly advise you to send us your completed booking form as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

BACK

- What is the minimum age in order for me to come on an Experience?

You can apply for a place on one of our Experiences beforehand but it is essential that you are 18 years old when your Experience actually begins.

BACK

- How old are people likely to be on an Experience?

Most individuals will be aged between 18 and 25.

BACK

- How many people will be on each Pepper Experience?

The 3 Month Gap Year Experience will have approximately 15 to 20 people on it. Other trips will vary in size. Please contact and we can give you details on the specific trip that you are interested in

BACK

- What kind of people will be on the Experience?

They will mostly consist of Gap year Students, University students, or individuals on a break from work.

BACK

Financial Matters

- What is included in the cost of the Experience?

To see a full break down of all that is included in each Experience please visit our Prices page.

BACK

- What is not included in the cost of the Experience?

Flights, insurance, and food and drink are not included. Neither are vaccinations or visa's if required. Any further activities you wish to do other than those stipulated must be covered by your own spending money. Please visit our Prices page for full details.

BACK

- Do I have to pay the full amount in one go?

No, all we ask to secure your place is a £450 deposit which is paid with your booking application. This deposit is included in the overall price of the Experience. The remaining balance is payable according to our payment schedule.

BACK

- Is the deposit refundable?

Yes, if we cannot offer you a place on our Experience we will repay the deposit in full. However if we offer you a place and you cancel at a later date, you will not receive your deposit back. For more details please refer to our terms and conditions.

BACK

- Why are flights not included in the price?

We have learnt that some individuals will be travelling directly before or after our Experience. This, together with other factors, such as the fluctuating price of flights, means it is more beneficial for you to book your own flights to ensure that your individual needs are met.

BACK

- How much personal spending money will I need?

A budget of £60-£80 per week is likely to be more than adequate. Obviously this is dependent on the individual and other factors such as how much extra you want to be doing outside of the Experience and the exchange rate.

BACK

- How should I hold my money for the duration of the Experience?

ATMs can be easily found at almost every destination of our Experience. We suggest you take a small amount of cash, a few travellers' cheques, and a bankcard with a 'Mastercard' or 'Visa' sign on it. You should seek advise from your local bank as to the cards that are accepted in South Africa and any charges that may be issued when withdrawing cash.

BACK

- What Currency do they use in South Africa?

The local currency in South Africa is the Rand. For the current exchange rate please see www.xe.com.

BACK

Health and Satefty

- Is there any emergency assistance?

Net Care, a private Emergency Medical Response organisation, will ensure that every individual will receive emergency assistance anywhere in South Africa.

BACK

- How advanced are the medical facilities in South Africa?

Medical facilities are of an extremely high standard in South Africa and medical services are available throughout the country.

BACK

- What vaccinations will I need?

There are no compulsory vaccinations or medications that are needed for travel on the Pepper Experience in South Africa. However should you be travelling after the end of the experience or if you want to know more regarding medical advice and travel, please seek professional advice from your local GP.

BACK

- Is travelling in South Africa safe?

Safety is Pepper's highest priority and we are constantly working to ensure your security. South Africa is a wonderful country but also can be a dangerous one if basic safety precautions are neglected. Travelling is safe as long as you are aware of certain basic things which will all be covered in your orientation. Petty theft can be a problem in certain areas but again vigilance and taking basic precautions go a very long way towards making sure you aren't a victim of any crime>

BACK

- Do I receive any safety advice?

You will be given extremely detailed safety information upon your arrival in South Africa including precautions to take. You will also be provided with individual South African sim cards for the use in your mobile phones as well as a comprehensive list of contact numbers in the case of an emergency. You will also receive a safety lecture at each new destination of the Experience containing any extra advice that is necessary.

BACK

- Is Insurance compulsory?

Personal travel insurance is compulsory on all of our Experiences and is fairly inexpensive to take out with your nearest STA branch or local travel agent. For more information on our requirements please refer to our terms and conditions.

BACK

Personal Preparation

- Will I need a visa, and how much will it cost?

Will I need a visa, and how much will it cost? If you hold a British passport a tourist visa can usually be obtained on arrival in South Africa. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are able to obtain a valid visa for South Africa and that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after the end of the Experience. Visas are issued purely at the discretion of the Embassy. We recommend that you seek further advice from the South African Embassy to avoid any problems.

BACK

- Do I arrange my own flights?

Our team at STA Travel will be on hand to provide you with suggested flights that coincide with your Experience. You are perfectly entitled to search for alternative flights independently.

BACK

- Can I fly with other members of the Pepper Experience?

Our team at STA Travel provide all our members of the Pepper Experience with provisional reservations when they have made their booking and, subject to availability, try to ensure that everyone is on the same flight. However the flights are only reserved and you must confirm them within a stated time period. If you do not do this you will have to make alternative flight arrangements.

BACK

- Do I arrange my own personal insurance?

We will send you details of our recommended insurance policy once you have booked. You are entitled to take out an alternative policy provided that it satisfies our requirements as shown in the terms and conditions. The insurance company must be made aware of exactly what your Experience entails.

BACK

- Will I be able to use my UK mobile phone in South Africa?

Provided that your mobile phone has 'international roaming' capabilities, you will be able to use it in South Africa. Coverage is generally good, but may decrease in some of the more rural areas we stay in. We recommend that you seek advice from your network provider to ensure that this service is available to you. On arrival in South Africa we will be providing you with local sim cards which will be significantly cheaper to call one another and for people in the UK wishing to contact you in South Africa. Alternatively, public phones and international phone cards are readily available for international calls at reasonable rates.

BACK

- What else do I need to remember to bring?

Anything you may need during your experience can be bought in South Africa. Certain personal items such as medication need to be brought with you. A comprehensive list of useful items will be sent to you, depending on your programme choices, after booking.

BACK

Travelling and Arriving Abroad

- Will I get collected from the airport?

Provided your flight is in a designated arrivals window and you have organised in advance with us, you will be collected by a Pepper representative at Cape Town International airport, and driven to your accommodation to relax and meet the other members of the Pepper Experience.

BACK

- Will I have the chance to travel on my own?

The Pepper Experience is fairly action packed and intensive and you will therefore not have time to travel for extended periods on your own. However you will have opportunities to go away on day trips or weekends and we will be happy to help you out and give you advice regarding this. We will also give you as much support as possible for any further travel you wish to do after the Pepper Experience and advice on putting your newly acquired skills and qualifications into practice elsewhere in the world.

The Pepper boardriding programme is a unique chance to experience three amazing sports and the lifestyles that surround them. We aim for you to come out of these three weeks with the basic skills to competently take up any of these sports and continue with them in your own time.

They will take place in a community centre just outside the city. You will be transported to the centre by a dedicated driver who will be with you all day.

BACK

- What sort of projects will I be involved in?

Many areas in Cape Town suffer from crime and rampant drug abuse. A frighteningly large number of children who grow up in these areas are drawn into this cycle. The Pepper programme involves working with young children both in their schools and at the community centre after school hours. BACK

- Will there be a donation given to the projects?

For full details of what this includes please see our prices page.

BACK

- How often will I be working on the projects?

BACK

- What will I get out of the Community Project?

You will be working with children in an area in which drugs and crime are often a likely route for them to follow. The aim of this programme is to provide a safe and encouraging environment for these children to learn life skills and other skills such as sports, music, arts. This will hopefully give them an outlet to avoid being sucked into the cycle of crime and drugs that is a way of life in this area. This is a 7 day course which is a necessary requirement for formal employment on board a yacht. It comprises of three main components: fire fighting, first aid and sea survival.

BACK

- Why is the STCW'95 not included in our initial programme price?

Due to the fact that many people that choose our yachting programme are not going to go on to work formally in the yachting industry and are doing it for personal experience and skills, we did not make this a necessary section of the programme. This course can be taken at any time anywhere in the world if at a later date you wanted to take it. MISCELLANEOUS

- What will the weather be like in South Africa?

You will be in Cape Town in the height of summer so be prepared for perfect weather but also an extremely powerful sun. As you move up to Durban you will be going from their rainy season into their most pleasant time of year with hot and less humid weather. The game reserves in Limpopo will be dry and fairly hot this time of year.

BACK

- What factor sun cream should I use?

The sun in South Africa is extremely powerful and we recommend nothing less than factor 30spf. This will prevent early burning and will allow your skin to become accustomed to the strong sun.

BACK

- How warm will the water be?

In Cape Town the water temperature depends on the side of the peninsula that you are at. The Atlantic side is not as warm as the Indian Ocean and you will need to wear a wetsuit, a 4:3 should be adequate. As we move up the coast the water will become warmer. By the time you reach the tropical ocean of Durban you can swim and surf in board shorts or a bikini.
